APA Citation Style (7th ed.): Welcome!

Concise Guide to APA Style (7th ed.)

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition)

About this guide

This guide is a brief introduction to the American Psychological Association (APA) Style for references and citations. It includes basic information about the following:

  • How to format in-text citations
  • How to cite journal/magazine articles, books/book chapters; webpages; and online reports
  • How to format an APA paper using the Concise Guide to APA Style

On October 1st, 2019, APA released the 7th edition. See the September 27, 2019 blog post, "Prepare for Change: Old APA versus New APA", by Miriam Bowers-Abbott on the Faculty Focus blog: https://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/teaching-and-learning/apa-style-updates/

Note: When the 7th edition style manual was released, APA published 2 different manuals:

  • The Concise Guide to APA Style is the official APA style resource for students. It is designed specifically for undergraduate writing.

  • The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is a more comprehensive and in depth resource for graduate students who are writing a dissertation or writing a manuscript for a professional publication.

Consult the guide or manual or the APA Style website for detailed standards and procedures.

The APA Style Website includes detailed information about Style and Grammar Guidelines as well as numerous Instructional Aids
