This guide provides an overview about evidence-based practice and includes links to databases and websites.

Overview of Research vs Quality Improvement

Research

  • Form and test hypotheses
  • Systematically study a problem of interest following a structured protocol
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret the findings of data collection
  • Disseminate the findings

Quality improvement

  • Focus on systems and processes
  • Establish measures to determine if a specific change actually leads to an improvement in systems and processes
  • Analyze data to improve systems related to processes and outcomes (i.e., cost, productivity, quality)
  • Use the findings to improve quality of care
