APA Citation Style (6th edition): Citing Micromedex

Citing Micromedex

Correctly citing information from Micromedex requires paying attention to the following details:

  • The section of Micromedex that the information is from (e.g., DRUGDEX® System, AltMedDex® System, CareNotes® System, etc.)
    • NOTE:  The full name for each section must include the Registered Trademark symbol and the word "System", as shown above
  • The searching platform used (e.g., internet access OR app access)

AltCareDex® System

The AltCareDex® System provides detailed information about alternative medicines or herbal treatments.  Since the AltCareDex® System is only available in the web version of Micromedex, each APA citation must include a “Retrieved from” date and URL.

CareNotes® System

The CareNotes® System is the patient education section of Micromedex.  Since the CareNotes® System is only available in the web version of Micromedex, each APA citation must include a “Retrieved from” date and URL.

DRUGDEX® System

DRUGDEX® System provides summary and detailed information about medications, including dosing/administration, medication safety, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, patient education and toxicology.  The DRUGDEX® System summary information is available both in the web version of Micromedex and also through the Drug Summary app. It makes a difference in your APA citation as to how you accessed the information.  THEREFORE it is critical that you make this distinction in your APA citation.
